Bad versus Good silicones

On naturally.com, I noticed there were a lot of questions about how to identify whether or not a product was curly girl (CG) approved. I looked at my old post about identifying which silicones were bad and good and thought it could be clearer. I condensed the old list even more and tried to break them down into more understandable categories.

If you are going CG, I would definitely avoid category 1 (not water soluble) because you need harsh sulfates to remove them. Category 2 is kind of iffy. Some people report buildup that is hard to remove while some say that these silicones can be removed by just washing with conditioner or shampoo with mild cleansers. If you really want to use a product that has silicones from category 2, I would just try it out and see how your hair reacts to it (if you do or don't get buildup). Category 3 has the silicones you don't have to worry about because they are water soluble. If you find these in a product, it is still a CG product even though it is a silicone because it washes out easily.

Silicones

Not water soluble (Will buildup in hair)
1. Cetearyl methicone
2. Cetyl dimethicone
3. Cyclopentasiloxane
4. Dimethicone
5. Dimethiconol
6. Stearyl dimethicone
7. Trimethylsilylamodimethicone

Slightly soluble (May cause buildup in hair but some have found will still wash out with cowash)
1. Amodimethicone
2. Cyclomethicone
3. Behenoxy dimethicone
4. Stearoxy dimethicone

“CG approved” Water Soluble (Will not buildup)
1. Dimethicone copolyol
2. Hydrolyzed wheat protein hydroxypropyl polysiloxane
3. Lauryl methicone copolyol
4. Silicones with PEG listed before it

Thanks for the updated CG-approved ingredient list. Now I just have to get my butt to the store & find the right products!

Any updates on the Mint Julep mask? I have it on right now. This is the second time I've used it s far. I'm AMAZED at how much dirt & oil it's pulling out of my skin right now!

Entirely Official: Thank you!

Janelle: I just found out it's Ulta's friends and family sale starting tomorrow you get 20% off. I might try to look for more CG products then.

I've used the Mint Julep mask only 3 times now. I really need to start using it more to see if it will help. When you remove the mask, do you use a damp washcloth? I don't see much dirt
& oil when I take the mask off. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I use a damp washcloth to remove it. I see the oil come out of my pores while the mask is still on my face. It makes those gross little dots all over haha. I like this one much better than the St. Ives Mineral Clay mask.

Janelle: Hmm..maybe I'm using too thick of a layer so I don't see those tiny dots. Do you use a thin layer?

Yah, I don't put on a thick layer. Not too thin either, just enough to cover my face with an even layer. Try that next time.

Thank you for the info on silicones. My curly hair is great until I wash it. Then two days of dry. I'll use the info to find the right shampoo.

Looks like "Pantene Pro-V Curl Shaping Gel" might be okay. Here are the ingredients:
Water, PVP, Laureth-23, VP/Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer, Triisopropanolamine, Carbomer, Methylparaben, DMDM Hydantoin, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Fragrance, Propylparaben, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Panthenol, Disodium EDTA. Does this sound okay to you?

Hi,
I see that Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Conditioner is on the approved list but not the Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Shampoo, is it not sulfate free?

Hi, I am knew to your blog and I love the information that you have posted. Your research of products has really helped me in my curly hair journey. I just wanted to know, whether or not you have you reviewed the new product line at Sally's, called beautiful textures. I know that the products do have cones, but their pretty far down the list. so, would they be curly girl approved? Please let me know when you get a chance. Thanks!

Hi. I just bought Nexxus Headress Luscious Volume Leave-In Conditioner and I don't know if its fine for co-washing. Can you check, please?

P.S. And make sure you find the exact name because all of them sound alike to me.
Thanks
